SOS: Euroradio office in Minsk is searched (UPDATED)

 



In this moment Euroradio's office is being searched by Belarusian police, with confiscation of the equipment.



Deputy editor-in-chief Vital Zybluk was given an unsigned copy of protocol of the search and confiscation. 

Around 17:30 Belarusian time Euroradio got a message on web page comments "Is it true that there is a search in your office?" When Vital Zybluk reached the office, he met people who were carrying out the equipment of the radio. He received from them the copy of the protocol where nothing can be clearly read. The witness was the engineer of the Chief Department of Administration of the president, to which the building belongs. 

Vital Zybluk: "The office looks like the tornado was here!"

Radosław Sikorski:"It's not about the outcome of election; it's about how it will be held"

Belarus may receive 3 billion euros from EU if the presidential election in December is fair.

"Belarus is now standing at crossroads. One road leads to closer relations with the European Union. However, it goes through the respect to human rights, the rights of minorities, and, in the first place, through free democratic elections. And it's not the outcome of the election which is very important to Europe. It's the quality of the election", said Poland's Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski during a joint press conference with German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle after their visit to Belarus on Tuesday.

European Commission suggests that Belarus should make its economy stronger

A European Commission official has informed ERB that the Joint Interim Plan, setting priorities to conduct reforms in the field of politics, democracy, the legal system and human rights in our country will be presented soon.

Lukashenka under pressure to declare day of mourning for Pinsk blast victims

Democratic presidential contenders have gathered and conducted a joint mega picket in the centre of Minsk today. Uladzimir Nyaklyayeu was the first to arrive followed by Vital Rymasheuski, Ryhor Kastusyou and Mikalai Statkevich. Andrei Sannikau was the last to arrive. The first leader of independent Belarus Stanislau Shushkevich also came to support the contenders. ERB wondered what the aim of the joint picket was.

Who nominated delegates to Belarusian People's Congress?

ERB has searched for official documents, which set out the terms and nomination procedures for delegates to Belarusian People's Congress.



The nomination of candidates for the 4th Belarusian People's Congress ended on October 27, the news that came up somewhat accidentally. ERB tried to find out how it was possible to get nominated for the congress and where the information about it was available.

What will be the first foreign visit of new President?

Nyaklyaeu, Statkevich and Tsyareshchanka have picked Moscow as their first desination; Ramanchuk will head to Canada, Rymasheuski to Lithuania or Ukraine. Mikhalevich will fly to Prague. Kastusyou will visit the capital which will invite him first.



ERB asked potential presidential candidates where they would pay their first visit to: Moscow, Brussels or Washington. Tell the Truth! campaign leader Uladzimir Nyaklyaue did not give an unexpected answer. He said brefly: "To the East!" Later, he explained.

Harbachou: 52 thousand entrepreneurs have left Belarus for 7 years



European Radio for Belarus counted how many years it will take public sector employees to collect money to buy an apartment, if they keep the whole salary untouched.

According to the latest data of the Belarusian Statistic Committee, an average inhabitant of Minsk earns 1 million 300 thousand roubles per month. The cheapest one-room apartments in Minsk costs 40-50 thousand dollars (135 million roubles). It turns out that if one keeps the whole salary untouched for 10 years, it will be possible to buy an apartment. However, at the same time one should not eat, drink or buy other necessary things.

Be Free festival shifts to Rovno next year



The organizers have decided to cancel Be Free music festival in Chernigov. Next year, it will be held in Rovno, western Ukraine. This fall, Be Free will make a tour across Belarus.

Belarus, Latvia may ink visa-free travel deal in August



Under the agreement, Belarusians from areas next to the border will be allowed to visit Daugavpils, while Latvians can travel freely to three districts in Belarus.

German helicopter crashes during competition near Minsk



A German pilot has died in a helicopter crash during the CIS Helicopter Sports Open near Minsk.

Nemtsov: Despite being used, we will not unite with Lukashenka


In respond to the use of the Russian opposition by the Belarusian media in an 'information war' with Russia, Boris Nemtsov called out: "Long Live Belarus!", while :yudmila Alexeyeva described the actions of the Belarusian television as disgusting.

The Belarusian side a new weapon for an information warfare with Russia. First, the Belausian state television aired interviews with the leaders of Georgia and Latvia who have sour relations with the Kremlin. Now, the official propaganda turned to the Russian opposition for help.

Expert: Lukashenka to visit Moscow within two weeks



Alexander Lukashenka is to visit Moscow within the next two or three weeks in order to sort out all the problems that led to an 'information war' between Belarus and Russia.

Will presidential elections be held on December 12?



Lukashenka has appointed a special meeting of the House of Representatives for September 7. The elections date will probably be appointed there.

Paul the octopus refuses to predict result of Belarusian presidential elections

Belarus may lose 2.5 percent of GDP due to higher gas costs

Entrants know English better than Belarusian and Russian


Some entrants threw dice to answer questions during the centralized tests and some people used bad language in their papers.

Entrants showed worse results this year in comparison with the last year. The best average grades were registered English – 38, former schoolchildren and pupils from grammar schools and lyceums scored more than 35 grades in geography, history and social science. The average grade in Belarusian and Russian was 31.

Will Belarusians be restricted when brining goods to Russia since July 1?



Under the Customs Code, it is allowed to bring not more than 3 liters of alcohol, 2 blocks of cigarettes, and your vehicle's tank should not have more than 10 liters of petrol.

If Belarus refuses to take part in the Customs Union with Russia and Kazakhstan, new customs regulationas theoertically are to cover Belarusian citizens as well since July 1, 2010.

In this case, when the bagage limitations are exceeded, Belarusians will have to pay 30 percent of goods' customs cost. They will also have to pay 10 euros for every extra liter of alcohol.

Economy ministry: Sausages and milk grow expensive due to public bus fares



Officials from the Ministry of Economy explain why Belarusian vegetables are more expensive than in Europe and promise to deal with the

Student allowances are 15 times less in Belarus than in Czech Republic

Dentists get license for alcohol, tobacco sales in Brest

A dental clinic in Brest is licensed to sell alcohol and tobacco.



The framed license is hanging on the wall of the dental clinic. Its says that "dental clinic Westmedservice is permitted to sell alcohol and tobacco products". Firm director Larysa Melnichuk felt confused saying she did not how to explain and asked her chief accountant Sviatlana Ivanauna who had been in charge of applying for the license.

Police find no drugs on Neklyaev but take newspapers for reading

The local and municipal elections are taking place in Belarus on April 25. 21300 deputies will be elected to serve on 1495 local councils -- regional, municipal, district and village councils. The biggest competition is for the Minsk City Council with 3.9 candidates for one seat. In average across the country, 1.2 candidates compete for one seat, reports the official news agency Belta.

Over 25000 people, including nearly 300 representatives of the opposition parties and movements remain in the race.

Five years in prison for violating copyrights in internet

A new law on copyright will soon appear in Belarus. A draft legislation has been tabled at the House of Representatives. The European Radio for Belarus explores if a new law is to regulate copyright in the internet.

Alexei Pichuryn, the head of the copyright department at the National Intellectual Property Center, says there is no clear clause on the internet in the current draft. But this does not mean the law will not regulate copyrights in the web.

Ousted Kyrgyz president Bakiyev says he does not accept his resignation

Kurmanbek Bakiyev today said in Minsk that he is not accepting his resignation from the post of the president of Kyrgyzstan.

He stressed that the recent revolution in Kyrgyzstan set his country back for decades.

Bakiyev noted that he feels responsible for the country's catastrophe and is ready to account for the turmoil under the law. "But this does not mean that I am ready to give up to the bandits and abandon my people", he said at the headquarters of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in Minsk.

Poland bids farewell to Lech Kaczynski (photo + video)



People were near the Presidential Palace the whole night. They kept bringing flowers and candles and the queue was several hundred meters long.

Candles are also lit in many other places in Warsaw – near churches, monuments, squares and crossroads.

Books of sympathy were placed in the Presidential Palace on the evening of April 11. People keep coming there to leave notes. Belarusians have also left their notes there.

Construction of railway for Astravets NPP has started (photo report)



Several kilometers of the railway that will connect Ashmyany with Astravets District have already been built

The construction of a railway line from Ashmyany to Astravets or, namely, to the future NPP (it will be 25 km long) started several months ago. Only three gauges of the railway have been built in that direction. They are several kilometers long. The place of the future railway station is being cleaned up in the nearest forest. Carriages with construction materials will be sorted there and the railway bridge is being rebuilt now. The train Maladzechna-Gudagai ran only up to Ashmyany station because of the construction works.
